The Long History of Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa: A Wellness Icon in Victoria
The Gold Rush Era
During the gold rush era, in their exploration of gold deposits, miners naturally discovered the many mineral springs in the region. Their focus, however, was on the gold, with little to no regard for the minerals in the natural springs.
At one stage, mines near Hepburn Springs resulted in the mineral springs drying up. After much local outcry, mining was stopped and the tourism industry started to thrive backed by the mineral springs unique and powerful healing history.
Swiss-Italian Settlers
The Shire of Hepburn and its surrounding regions have a long and rich history with Swiss-Italian settlers. The settlers hailed from Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and the Duchies of Modena and Parma across Europe before settling in the Hepburn Region. The Swiss-Italian settlers cherished the region for its mineral waters which helped shape many of the wineries you see today.
